Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
The projects cover key areas of Tamil Nadu's transport and industrial infrastructure. The Metro extension is expected to improve urban connectivity, while highway, railway and port initiatives aim to support the movement of passengers and goods. The brain research centre and C-STROKE atlas also contribute to scientific research into human brain structure and stroke.
The newly inaugurated stretch is part of Corridor 4 and covers approximately 15 kilometres, with 11 elevated Metro stations. The corridor also features a 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations.
Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay jointly flagged off the new Metro services and travelled on the train. The new stretch is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai's western suburbs and other parts of the city.
National Highway and Railway Projects
National Highway projects worth around ₹3,700 crore were included in the programme. These comprise road works intended to improve regional connectivity and ease traffic congestion.
The Prime Minister also dedicated and inaugurated railway infrastructure projects worth over ₹750 crore. These include the Karaikal–Peralam railway line, three rail flyovers in Coimbatore and surrounding areas, and five redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
The five stations are Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal. The initiatives are intended to improve passenger facilities and strengthen railway connectivity.
Port and Petroleum Infrastructure
The programme also included infrastructure projects at Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port to strengthen maritime facilities and improve cargo-handling and logistics capacity.
At Chennai Port, the projects include a paved storage yard, four export-import godowns, an upgraded cruise terminal and a seafarers' club. At Kamarajar Port, the programme includes the Coal Berth-3 project and planned capital dredging works for the next stage of a container terminal project.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a Group II/III lube oil base stocks project at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited's Manali refinery. The project is estimated to cost around ₹1,620 crore and is designed for an annual production capacity of 270,000 tonnes.
IIT Madras Brain Centre Dedicated to the Nation
The Prime Minister dedicated the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation. The centre's scientific initiative aims to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering different stages of life, from the foetal stage to old age.
He also released C-STROKE, an atlas of the human brain affected by ischaemic stroke. It features more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections and is intended to help researchers investigate the condition and identify potential therapeutic targets.
The projects announced and inaugurated during the visit cover a broad range of infrastructure and research activities, with an emphasis on improving transport connectivity, strengthening logistics and advancing scientific research in Tamil Nadu.
