Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
UPI represents one of India’s biggest digital transformations of the last decade. It changed digital payments from a technology used mainly by urban consumers into a nationwide financial tool used by individuals, small businesses and large organisations. The platform’s growth also demonstrates how public digital infrastructure can create large-scale economic participation by making financial services faster and more accessible.
Impact on Financial Inclusion
One of UPI’s biggest achievements has been expanding access to digital payments.
Small traders, rural users and individuals without access to traditional payment infrastructure have increasingly adopted digital transactions. By reducing dependence on cash and enabling low-value instant payments, UPI has supported wider participation in the digital economy. The platform has also played an important role in strengthening India’s Digital Public Infrastructure ecosystem.
Global Recognition
The Finance Ministry said UPI has emerged as one of the most successful pillars of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure. The International Monetary Fund has recognised UPI as the world’s largest real-time payment system. According to available data, UPI accounted for nearly 49 per cent of global real-time payment transaction volume in 2025, highlighting its scale and reach.
