The sector also has a significant livelihood role, with an estimated 87,000 households currently engaged in livestock rearing across the state. Veterinary and animal husbandry-related activities also account for one of the larger shares of loan applicants under Mizoram’s flagship Bana Kaih (Hand-holding) scheme, reflecting demand for financial support among people involved in the sector.
Poultry is the most widely reared livestock category in Mizoram. The latest livestock census recorded 621,541 birds in the state. Despite the local poultry population, Mizoram imported around 1,265 metric tonnes of poultry from outside the state during the previous financial year. The imports were valued at approximately ₹37.95 crore.
To reduce dependence on supplies from outside the state, the government has outlined plans to establish three Mega Egg Production Farms by 2047.
Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
Reducing dependence on outside supplies could strengthen Mizoram's rural economy, create livestock-based livelihoods and improve local food security.
Officials said a poultry facility currently being established with NABARD funding is expected to significantly increase egg production and contribute to the state's self-sufficiency efforts. The government is also focusing on the piggery sector, another important component of Mizoram's livestock economy.
Support measures are being formulated for pig farmers, with the state targeting 60% insurance coverage among pig rearers within two years and 100% coverage by 2047. The government is also preparing a dedicated scheme aimed at supporting aspiring piggery entrepreneurs and encouraging greater participation in organised livestock farming. Mizoram's broader objective is to meet 90% of its domestic demand for pork, poultry and milk through local production by 2047.
The strategy combines livestock insurance, infrastructure development, entrepreneurship support and increased production capacity to reduce the state's dependence on imports.
The livestock sector's contribution to the state economy and the large number of households dependent on it make animal husbandry an important component of Mizoram's long-term rural and economic development plans.
