Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
Semiconductors and electronic components are essential to industries such as smartphones, computers, automobiles, telecommunications, defence equipment and advanced manufacturing. Expanding domestic production of electronic components, semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment can strengthen India's supply chains and increase local manufacturing capabilities. The latest ECMS approvals cover several upstream products, including copper foil, battery materials and specialty ceramics. These products support different segments of the wider electronics and industrial manufacturing ecosystem. The Semicon 2.0 portal also provides an application channel for companies seeking to participate in additional semiconductor fabrication, equipment and packaging projects. The actual economic impact will depend on project implementation, production capacity, technological development and the timely execution of approved investments.
The newly approved applications cover 10 product segments across electronic components, supply-chain materials and capital goods.
The electronic components category includes multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs), relays, heat sinks and specialty ceramics.
The supply-chain materials category covers copper foil, anode material and cathode active material for lithium-ion batteries, polypropylene film and camera rims. The approvals also include capital goods and their components, supporting equipment manufacturing and factory automation.
The projects are spread across seven states: Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
With these additional approvals, the cumulative number of approved ECMS applications has reached 118 across 34 product categories and 16 states.
The cumulative projected investment under the scheme stands at ₹77,051 crore. The approved applications are expected to generate production worth ₹5,73,146 crore and create approximately 81,755 direct employment opportunities.
The latest approvals extend domestic manufacturing coverage to additional upstream materials and industrial components, including copper foil, battery materials and specialty ceramics.
The two initiatives address different parts of India's electronics and semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. Semicon 2.0 focuses on expanding semiconductor capabilities, while ECMS supports domestic manufacturing of electronic components, materials and related capital goods.
