The Story Behind The News

Context, analysis and verified insights that explain the story beyond the headline.

Background

Pakistan observes August 5 as 'Youm-e-Istehsal' every year in response to India's decision in 2019 to revoke the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and reorganise it into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. India has consistently maintained that the constitutional changes were an internal matter and has repeatedly urged Pakistan to vacate territories under its illegal occupation.

India on Wednesday firmly rejected Pakistan's remarks on the so-called 'Youm-e-Istehsal', reiterating that the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of India.

Responding to Pakistan's statements, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said such remarks have no basis and cannot alter the reality regarding India's sovereignty over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
