The Election Commission of India has allotted separate names and election symbols to the two rival factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), following an internal dispute over control of the party.
The faction led by Mamata Banerjee has been allotted the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” along with the Football Player symbol.
The rival faction has been allotted the name “Democratic Trinamool Congress” and the Envelope symbol.
The decision comes a day after the Election Commission temporarily froze the use of the original “All India Trinamool Congress” name and its traditional “Flowers and Grass” symbol by both factions. The arrangement has been made for the upcoming West Bengal bypolls while the Commission considers the competing claims over the party’s identity.
