Digital payments platform PhonePe has announced plans to hire more than 20,000 additional on-roll frontline sales employees over the next year as part of a major expansion of its merchant network across smaller towns and rural areas.
The company said the new workforce will help reach more merchants, support onboarding and KYC processes, deploy payment devices and provide ongoing assistance to businesses using digital payment services.

Alongside the hiring plan, PhonePe also plans to deploy more than 50 lakh payment devices over the next 12 months, including SmartSpeakers and point-of-sale (POS) devices. Around half of these devices are expected to be deployed in rural India, with the expansion extending into Tier 6 towns and other rural geographies.
PhonePe said the expansion is aimed at strengthening the merchant acceptance infrastructure required to take digital payments deeper into India's smaller markets. The company also linked the expansion to the recently announced merchant discount rate framework and a dedicated fund for small-merchant expansion.
The planned on-roll workforce is expected to play a local role in merchant acquisition, KYC, device deployment and post-installation support, particularly in areas where digital payment infrastructure is still expanding.
