The scale of the transformation becomes clearer when today's numbers are compared with the situation a decade ago.
India's solar capacity was only around 2.8 GW in 2014. By July 2026, it had increased to 164.59 GW. Wind capacity also rose from about 21 GW in 2014 to 58.14 GW. The government's latest data shows that renewable capacity has expanded nearly fourfold since 2014.
Solar Leads India's Clean-Power Expansion
Solar energy has emerged as the main driver of India's recent capacity growth.
During FY2025-26, India added 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity, the highest annual addition recorded so far. Solar accounted for around 44.6 GW of that increase, while wind contributed about 6 GW. The expansion is also being accompanied by efforts to strengthen India's domestic renewable-energy manufacturing base, particularly in solar equipment. This is important because India's clean-energy transition is increasingly connected with manufacturing, investment, jobs and energy security rather than being limited to electricity generation alone.
From Capacity Growth to Energy Generation
Installed capacity does not automatically mean the same amount of electricity is generated. Actual generation depends on factors such as sunlight, wind conditions, plant utilisation and grid availability.
Government data shows that renewable electricity generation nevertheless increased substantially, from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26.
This indicates that India's renewable expansion is translating into a much larger role for clean sources in actual electricity supply as well.
