Four armed suspects were killed in an exchange of fire with police near Songsak in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya in the early hours of Saturday, after a joint security team intercepted a vehicle following credible intelligence about an alleged plan to abduct officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for ransom.
According to a press release issued by East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Pawar Swapnil Vasantrao, IPS, on Sunday, August 30, the operation was launched after police received information that a group of armed miscreants was moving towards Songsak.

A joint team led by the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), along with East Garo Hills District Police and personnel from Songsak Police Station, subsequently established a naka at Songsak Reserve along the Dagal-Songsak road.
At around 4 AM, the team signalled a Bolero vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-FD-2889 to stop.
Police said the occupants of the vehicle opened fire at the security team after being signalled to stop. The police team returned fire in self-defence, resulting in a brief exchange of gunfire. The police vehicle also sustained bullet damage during the firing.

After the exchange ended, four occupants of the vehicle were found seriously injured.
They were initially taken to Songsak Primary Health Centre and were later referred to Williamnagar Civil Hospital, where they were declared brought dead. Police identified the deceased as Allason Marak of Mendima, North Garo Hills; Sustom Rabha; Kalam Ali; and Bobidul Islam, all of whom police said were linked to criminal activities.
Police said Marak was a key accused in the recent Damra firing case, in which a businessman was killed. According to the police, Sustom Rabha had criminal cases relating to robbery, abduction, kidnapping and violations under the Arms Act registered at police stations in Dudhnoi, Mendipathar and Dadenggre. Kalam Ali was also allegedly linked to a case involving abduction, extortion and assault registered at Krishnai Police Station. Following the encounter, security personnel recovered two factory-made pistols, along with live and used rounds of ammunition, from the vehicle. Police said one of the pistols carried the marking “Beretta.”
Police have launched further investigation into the incident, including the alleged abduction plan, the identities and criminal background of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the exchange of fire.
Authorities have also appealed to the public not to believe or circulate rumours and unverified information regarding the encounter.
