Somali maritime forces have rescued the Sibu 1, an oil-products tanker that had been held by armed pirates for more than a month, in a major counter-piracy operation off Somalia.
The Puntland Maritime Police Force said the operation lasted around 48 hours and resulted in the recovery of the tanker and its crew. All 20 crew members were reported safe, including 16 Indian seafarers.

The tanker, also known as Seamull, was seized on August 20 after six armed individuals boarded the vessel while it was sailing through the Gulf of Aden, approximately 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla, Yemen. The attackers subsequently diverted the vessel towards Somali waters.
Puntland authorities said their maritime forces tracked the vessel before launching the operation. The tanker was eventually intercepted near the coast of the Mudug region after being pursued along the Somali coastline.
According to Puntland authorities, one suspected pirate was killed, four were wounded and 15 were captured during the operation. One Puntland security officer was also injured. The authorities said the crew and their property were recovered safely.
