Why This Matters
The November auctions highlight the continued international demand for important works by modern and Impressionist masters. The sales also provide an opportunity to bring paintings from significant private collections back into public attention.
The Christie’s 20th Century Evening Sale is scheduled for November 17 at its Rockefeller Center headquarters in New York. The wider Fall Marquee Week includes six live auctions and two online sales scheduled between November 17 and 23.
Meanwhile, Sotheby’s will hold its Legendary: The Blaquier-Arrieta Collection Evening Auction in New York on November 18.
One of its principal attractions is Vincent van Gogh’s Châtaigniers en fleurs, painted on May 24, 1890, in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, during the final months of the artist’s life. The painting is expected to attract a price in the region of $180 million, according to auction-market estimates reported ahead of the sale. Sotheby’s official catalogue lists its estimate as available upon request.
The collection also includes Paul Cézanne’s Arlequin, which has been estimated at around $120 million in auction-market coverage. The painting is among the important works in the collection, which comprises 12 paintings by leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists.
The Blaquier-Arrieta collection was assembled by Argentine collectors Carlos Pedro Blaquier and Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier. Several of its paintings have remained largely out of public view for decades, making the upcoming sale a significant event for international art collectors.
The November auctions are expected to draw considerable attention from collectors and institutions, with major works by influential artists carrying substantial valuations.
