The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani has expanded its full tuition scholarship initiative, increasing the number of eligible high-performing entrance examination candidates from 500 to 1,000 from the 2027 admission cycle.
Under the expanded initiative, candidates securing a rank among the top 1,000 in the BITS Admission Test (BITSAT) will be eligible for a 100% tuition fee scholarship if their annual family income does not exceed ₹20 lakh. The scholarship will cover tuition fees throughout the four-year undergraduate programme, subject to recipients maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 7.5 at their respective campuses.

Important points readers should notice.
Issue/Event: BITS Pilani expands its full tuition scholarship coverage from the top 500 to the top 1,000 BITSAT rankers.
Location: India.
Authority/Organisation: Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani.
Action Taken: The institute announced expanded scholarship eligibility for the BITSAT 2027 admission cycle.
Impact: More eligible high-performing students from families earning up to ₹20 lakh annually can receive full tuition support for four years.
The announcement was made by BITS Pilani Group Vice-Chancellor V Ramgopal Rao. The expanded initiative will apply to eligible students entering the institute through BITSAT 2027.
One of the important features of the programme is that eligible students will not need to submit a separate scholarship application after joining. The financial assistance will be incorporated into the admission offer, allowing candidates to understand their tuition support before making their admission decision.
The expansion builds on the institute's earlier tuition-blind admission initiative, which covered eligible candidates among the top 500 BITSAT rankers from the 2026 admission cycle.
Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
The cost of higher education can influence where students apply and whether they accept an admission offer, even when they perform well in competitive entrance examinations. By extending full tuition support to eligible candidates among the top 1,000 BITSAT rankers, BITS Pilani is widening the number of students who can access financial assistance based on academic performance and family income. The initiative could make the institute a more accessible option for high-performing students who might otherwise consider tuition costs a barrier. It also highlights the growing role of merit-cum-income-based financial assistance in higher education, particularly at institutions where tuition expenses can be substantial.
According to the institute's leadership, the earlier initiative was followed by a 50% increase in the number of eligible candidates from the top 500 rankers who joined BITS Pilani in 2026. The BITSAT score required to secure a place in this group also increased from 314 to 324.
The institute also reported an increase in admissions among candidates ranked between 501 and 1,000, who were outside the earlier scholarship coverage. Overall, the number of students joining from the top 1,000 rankers increased by 50%, according to the Group Vice-Chancellor.
BITSAT is a computer-based entrance examination used for admission to the institute's integrated first-degree programmes, including Bachelor of Engineering (BE), Master of Science (MSc) and Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharma).
The scholarship expansion comes as BITS Pilani continues to increase financial support across its academic programmes. During the 2025–26 academic year, the institute distributed approximately ₹190 crore through scholarships, fee waivers and fellowships across its First Degree, Higher Degree and PhD programmes.
Of this amount, around ₹101 crore was allocated to undergraduate students through merit-based, merit-cum-need and international student scholarship programmes. The institute said approximately one in every four undergraduate students across its campuses received some form of financial assistance.
The new initiative is expected to widen access to BITS Pilani for academically strong candidates whose families meet the prescribed income limit. However, students should understand that the announced benefit covers tuition fees; it should not automatically be interpreted as a waiver of hostel, mess or other expenses.
The expansion also places academic performance at the centre of continued financial support, as recipients must maintain the required 7.5 CGPA to retain the scholarship.
