FM Nirmala Sitharaman Says India's Progress Must Remain Rooted in Its Civilizational Heritage

India's development journey must not come at the cost of its civilizational identity, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while addressing the CD Deshmukh Lecture 2026 in New Delhi.

She said India's ambition should be to build a prosperous and globally successful society while retaining the values, traditions and wisdom that have shaped the country over centuries.

Addressing the CD Deshmukh Lecture 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman outlined a vision of development that combines economic progress with India's civilizational heritage.

She said the country's destiny is to become prosperous without becoming consumerist, wealthy without becoming materialistic and globally successful without losing its civilisational character.

The Finance Minister emphasised that India's development model should seek a balance between economic ambition and broader social and cultural responsibilities.

According to her vision, India should become a developed civilisation that combines prosperity with trusteeship, enterprise with responsibility and innovation with civilisational wisdom.
